GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is an image format that supports animation. Unlike video files, GIFs autoplay without user interaction, loop continuously, and work everywhere — social media, messaging apps, forums, emails, and websites. They're the lingua franca of short, expressive animations on the internet.
GIFs are ideal for reaction clips, product demos, tutorial snippets, and social media content. They autoplay in most contexts where video won't, including emails and many forum platforms. A well-crafted GIF captures attention instantly. Converting a key moment from a video into a GIF makes it shareable across virtually any platform.
Convertful uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (running in your browser) to decode your video, extract frames, and encode them as an animated GIF. You can set start/end times to trim, adjust the frame rate, and control the output dimensions. The entire process runs locally — no upload required. Processing time depends on video length and your device's performance.

Yes. Set start and end times to convert only a portion of the video.
GIF file size grows quadratically with width and linearly with FPS. A 480-pixel wide, 10-FPS clip is a good default for sharing on social or chat apps. Drop the width to 320 or the FPS to 8 for dramatically smaller files; push to 720 and 15 FPS only for short clips where smoothness matters more than size.
